Where self-service tools and research support are insufficient, researchers can request additional data and technology services via consultation services.

Data Services

Research Informatics Center team members are STARR data experts. They can create custom datasets for you. These may require cohort design or data linking. Note further that these efforts may accrue some cost.

Clarity data:  Only a subset of most frequently used data is accessible in the r-CDWs. RIC can link r-CDW data with Clarity data as needed.

Imaging data: Request for radiology PACS DICOM files (both SHC and LPCH) or cardiology DICOM files (both SHC and LPCH), or retinal images (SHC only), both identified or limited data set or de-identified data,  is met by members of the Research IT team. Research IT has developed high throughput DICOM acquisition and de-identification capabilities. Researchers must first complete an initial consultation with the RIC. Note that RIC staff can help the research team develop a cohort. In addition to using EHR data for search, RIC has access to SHC Montage application (aka Nuance PowerScribe 360 and Montage Search and Analytics) that allows for a better search on Radiology notes. Learn more about imaging data in STARR.

OMOP data: Request for eprotocol specific OMOP data, identified or limited data set,  are met by data processing pipelines developed by Research IT team. These pipelines are not fully automated yet. Researchers must first complete an initial consultation with the RIC to understand the regulatory requirements e.g. IRB, Data Privacy Attestation and Data Risk Assessment. Note that RIC staff can help the research team develop a cohort. RIC can also help join OMOP data with other EHR data not available in OMOP. Research IT portion of the service is currently fully subsidized by Dean’s Office. Learn more about OMOP Common Data Model.

Bedside monitoring data: Request for eprotocol specific bedside monitoring data, identified or limited data set,  are met by data processing pipelines developed by Research IT team. These pipelines are not fully automated yet. Researchers must first complete an initial consultation with the RIC to understand the regulatory requirements e.g. IRB, Data Privacy Attestation and Data Risk Assessment. Note that RIC staff can help the research team develop a cohort. RIC can also help join bedside monitoring data with OMOP data or other EHR data. Research IT portion of the service is currently fully subsidized by Dean’s Office. Learn more about bedside monitoring data in STARR.

Other data: A variety of data types have been delivered to researchers in the past via STARR. These include clinical photos from the SHC Epic "Blob Server" tagged as "photo derm", XCelera database that contains echocardiogram metadata from SHC, EEG waveform Nikon Kohden files from LPCH, Aria and PowerPath databases. If you have an approved IRB, please follow the data access process. Depending on the specific data requested, the team will guide you through the remaining steps.

Technology Services

Real time HL7 data: Research IT supports a real time complex event processing engine based on HL7 feeds in STARR that can be customized to meet research needs. Lab and pharmacy orders, lab results, patient admits, transfers, and discharges and other essential messages can be used to configure real-time alerts.

Research technology consultations: Research IT supports an extensive catalog of services in clinical research requiring data in STARR. Are you building a REDCap project where you need some data from STARR? Do you want a research data lake that is refreshed regularly and has data from disparate systems and is tuned for your cohort or disease area?

TDS "Front Door" to research: Do you need services from other TDS portfolios? Perhaps you need integration of a new device in the clinic. Alternately, you need data from a system that no one has requested before. Research IT partners with other TDS portfolios to bring a suitable solution for your research needs.
